Timeless Thoughts: My First Selfie

Many joke about how technologically clueless their parents are. Not me—in the 1990s, my mother was a hardcore Apple fangirl. She went to Apple meetings, taught me how to do things like install ram, and was also an early adopter of a lot of tech.

Thus, I’ve had digital cameras for a long time. What’s below is perhaps one of my first digital selfies. It’s the earliest I can find, being from 1998 and taken with a Canon PowerShot. I bet some of you weren’t even born in 1998. ^^ Anyway, don’t be fooled by the lack of a mirror; don’t be fooled by the camera not being held in my hand. I set the timer.

Look at how small it is! Unfortunately, it’s cropped and I don’t have access to the original image, so it’s even smaller than it need be but it is from the ancient days of 640×480 and 800×600 screen resolutions. Regardless, back then, I enjoyed playing with cameras and taking pictures with friends. Not much has changed.

Canon is still my brand of choice. Today, I use a Canon 60D (a DSLR). ♥ Do you have any really old digital photographs or memories of taking such photographs?

For the curious, the camera in the header is a medium format (hipster ^^) Diana F+ film camera (ironically from 2012). It’s interesting and gorgeous, but film is too much work for me.

Now, this is an awesome, unique concept of Timeless Thoughts. It’s great your mum’s so open-minded that her actions allowed you great exposure to technology. I can’t remember when I first used a digital camera, but I think that was probably in late high school for me.

You look the same as young!Chantelle 😀 I think the fact that you used a timer to capture this selfie is pretty cool. This was the way to do it long before cellphones and selfie sticks came about XD

But 1998, damn! We were in like 7th and/or 8th grade then, hahaha! That was so long ago! The only technology device I remember that was popular back then were pagers for me!

Wow awesome! I was 6 years old in 1998 and we were so poor that cameras had those rolls which were pricy, so of course I couldn’t do stuff like selfies. Also a 6 year old shouldn’t be taking selfies hah. I think I wanna dig up my first selfie haha, I think I must have been 13 when I first got my hands on a digital camera! Btw I love seeing people’s baby pictures so I LOVE this post! <3

I really want a portable camera to take pretty photos, but I might just wait for the iPhone 6 haha. I know phone cameras can never beat real cameras but $$$.

That’s cool that your mom has been into technology! My dad is an engineer, so I grew up with computers and digital cameras too. I used to own several in the Canon Powershot series before finally moving onto a DSLR. I remember doing selfies with those old cameras!

My first DSLR was the Canon 50D! It’s predecessor to the 60D. A couple years ago, I switched to full frame, so now I’m on the 6D :)

I still have many old digital photos that were taken in 640×480 resolution. They look so tiny now, but they’re fun to look back on!

I was 9 in 1998 because I was born in 1989 of August that year. That’s amazing that your mother gave you the love and start in technology. I’m always happy to read stories like these. This was a great Timeless Thoughts entry. I think I enjoyed this one the most. Never had a DSLR. I don’t really care too much about photography, to be honest. Oh well. Glad you enjoy it!
